Blarney House and Gardens - Co. Cork Blarney House, situationed just 200 yards south of the great castle itself, is Blarney's newest treasure. It is one of the most elegant and gracious of the Great Houses of Ireland, a family home now tastefully restored. Built in 1874 it is beautifully situated overlooking Blarney Lake. The house is set in acres of parkland filled with rare and unusual trees including many maples, southern beech and giant western red cedars. In spring the grounds are carpeted with bulbs and the 'Belgian beds', full of hybrid azaleas, are in full flower. There are formal gardens around the house with manicured lawns, rose-beds, mixed shrub beds, which contain many rhododendrons. The house looks down over green pastures, where horses and cattle graze, to Blarney Lake. You may take pleasant stroll around the lake and woodland walks. There is a fern garden with the atmosphere of a tropical jungle, a horse's graveyard, the ruin of an old limekiln and a Victorian 'ice house'. There are conducted tours of the house which is open during the summer season.
